10 years in the making – Bluegum View Taxi Rank opens to public

Duduza – The Bluegum View Taxi Rank was officially handed to the people of Duduza and taxi operators on April 16.

The CoE’s MMC for Roads and Transport Management, Andile Mngwevu, said the rank’s purpose is to ensure people’s easy movement.

“This rank would have been built 10 years ago and completed in 2021. The delay was mainly due to issues between the city and the service providers.

“We negotiated with those in the taxi industry to ensure we could open this rank and hand it to the community,” said Mgwevu.

The construction, completed in June 2021, saw the city spend well over R17m.

“We also believe it will create jobs because there are stalls at the rank. We plead with the people of Duduza to protect this state-of-the-art infrastructure. The taxi associations must ensure they monitor all the activities happening in this facility and avoid any illegal activity,” he said.

Mgwevu condemned the taxi violence occurring around Ekurhuleni.

The CoE spent over R17m to build the Bluegum View Taxi Rank.

“We plead with our associations to find ways to engage with one another and resolve these conflicts,” he added.

The CoE, as the planning authority, has a mandate to provide high-quality, safe, accessible, affordable and environmentally friendly public transport services and infrastructure.

The facility has been on the city’s Integrated Development Plan for Duduza for some time because of the community’s pressing transport needs.

The city has committed to maintaining and cleaning the rank.
