2027: Don’t drag Nigeria into flawed election – Wike-backed PDP warns Senate

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned the Senate against dragging Nigeria into flawed elections.

The faction also called on the Red Chamber of the National Assembly to expedite amendments to the Electoral Act.

According to Vanguard, Mohammed Jungudo, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, said the slow pace of action by the National Assembly sends the wrong signal at a time when public confidence in the electoral process remains fragile.

“The Senate and the National Assembly should recognise the importance of this amendment to the Electoral Act and ensure its speedy passage to strengthen our electoral system and processes,” Jungudo said.

He added that postponing the amendments risks deepening existing weaknesses and eroding voter trust ahead of future elections.

“They must not allow the country to enter another election cycle without addressing the flaws exposed by the 2023 elections,” he stressed.

The warning comes amid mounting pressure from political actors and civil society groups, who insist that reforms to the Electoral Act are essential to prevent a repeat of the controversies that marred the last general elections.
