2027: South-East ex-govs back Tinubu, launch forum to drive regional developmentĀ

Ahead of the 2027 general election, former governors from South-East region have expressed strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

They hinged their decision on the Tinubu administration’s infrastructural development efforts across the zone.

DAILY POST reports that the former governors took the stand on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, following the formal inauguration of the Forum of South-East Former Governors, a body established to support and advise serving governors in the region on critical zonal and national issues.

According to a communiquƩ issued at the end of their meeting and read by former governor of Ebonyi State and Minister of works, Engr. David Umahi, the forum is designed as a non-partisan platform open to all former governors of South-East states, regardless of political affiliation.

Members noted that while several former governors were unable to attend the inaugural meeting due to medical engagements and other commitments, they expressed confidence that over 90 percent participation would be achieved in subsequent gatherings.

The forum commended the current South-East governors for what it described as ā€œremarkable stridesā€ in infrastructure development, security, and empowerment initiatives across the region.

In particular, the former governors praised President Tinubu for what they termed an ā€œinfrastructure revolutionā€ in the South-East, as well as for appointing several individuals from the region to key positions in his administration.

They also acknowledged the Federal Government’s support to state governments nationwide, noting that such assistance has significantly contributed to the achievements recorded by governors in the South-East.

The forum further declared that governors in the region are united in their support for President Tinubu’s re-election, describing the move as a ā€œstrategic and forward-looking decision.ā€

As part of its next steps, the body announced plans to engage directly with serving governors in the South-East, including a scheduled courtesy visit to brief them on the objectives of the forum and explore areas of collaboration.

They expressed commitment to continue supporting development initiatives in the region and to help enlighten citizens on the efforts of both state governments and the Federal Government.

ā€œThe South East Forum of Former Governors is hereby formed today, the 7th of April 2026. The purpose of this body is to support the serving governors of the South East and advise them on key zonal and national matters.

ā€œThe forum shall be open to all former governors, irrespective of party affiliation, who have served in the South East.

ā€œWe commend the great work that the current governors of the South East are doing for the benefit of our people.
