In South Africa, 36 bodies of clandestine miners were recovered from an abandoned well at Stilfontein, 150 km southwest of Johannesburg, after two days of rescue operations, according to the police. On Tuesday, 27 other miners were declared dead, while several dozen survivors, weakened, could not be rescued. Local estimates suggest the presence of more than a hundred bodies in the underground galleries of this mining zone.
