Arsenal has confirmed the acquisition of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal close to £60 million. Zubimendi is the Gunners’ second signing of the summer transfer period, following goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s move from Chelsea for £5 million. In a statement, Arsenal expressed their excitement, saying: “We’re pleased to announce that Spain international Martin Zubimendi has signed a long-term contract with us.” The 23-year-old comes from Real Sociedad, where he made 236 first-team appearances after rising through the club’s academy. In April 2021, Martin played a key role in helping Sociedad secure victory in the postponed 2019/20 Copa del Rey against their local rivals, Athletic Club, alongside current Arsenal player Mikel Merino. He was consistently present during the 2022/23 season as Real Sociedad achieved their best league finish in recent years, ending the season in fourth place, which guaranteed them Champions League football for only the third time and marked their first appearance in 10 years. As a Spanish international, Martin participated in all five matches during the 2020 Olympic Games, where Spain won a silver medal in Tokyo. He has since earned 19 senior caps for La Roja, winning the 2023 UEFA Nations League and contributing to Spain’s 2-1 victory over England to clinch Euro 2024, where he played as a substitute in the second half. After transferring to Arsenal, Zubimendi expressed, “This is a significant milestone in my career.” It’s the action I had been seeking and one I desired to take. Upon arriving, one instantly recognizes the significance of this club and team. “I chose Arsenal because their playing style aligns well with my own.” Recently, they have demonstrated their capabilities, and even greater achievements are anticipated.
