Young: I Could Have Made a Lot Just by Being a Substitute at Man United

Ashley Young, the former winger for Manchester United, stated that he could have earned more as a substitute if he had chosen to stay at Old Trafford. Young departed from United at 34 years old with six months remaining on his contract. He subsequently signed a six-month deal with Inter, which was later extended for the 2020-21 season, during which Inter secured their first Serie A title in over ten years. Additionally, Young mentioned that Manchester United made a last-minute offer to keep him from joining Inter, but by that time, he had already made his choice. I believe no player at Manchester United ever really wants to depart from the team. I was leading the largest club in the world back then. However, Aaron Wan-Bissaka had joined the team, and Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer, who was the manager then, assured me that he would be getting more playing time. Young mentioned to Sky Sports, “I might have remained, but then I became aware of Antonio Conte’s interest.” At 34, I faced a decision: remain captain at United while sitting on the bench, or join another league and play for a manager who personally reached out to me, saying, ‘I want you to come here and play for my team.’ People often say I could have stayed and made money as a substitute, but my passion is playing football; it’s what I have always loved. When I was a child, my dream was to play football and achieve success. When I got here, Inter held the first position in the league.
