During my placement en garde à vue at the Ziguinchor Search Section, I was forced to sleep three consecutive nights with a hand handcuffed and attached to the foot of a table. Deprived of all freedom of movement, I had only one hand for acts as essential as urinating. Monsieur le Président, in order to do this, I had to unbutton my trousers with one hand alone, without assistance, and then I had to lower my trousers, project my penis out of my trousers, and then I had to hold a 20L can in a squatting position, and then I had to do it with one hand only, the other hand being immobilized with a cuff at the foot of a table. This situation exposed me to a permanent risk of being polluted (pissed on) in degrading conditions, contrary to the fundamental principles of human dignity. This treatment, manifestly cruel, inhuman and degrading, violates not only our fundamental rights.. Before even thinking about any form of national reconciliation, it is imperative that justice be done: that those responsible be identified, brought to justice, and that effective reparations be ordered for this inhumane treatment. Respect for human dignity, firm condemnation of such practices and the assurance that they will never be repeated must be the indispensable preconditions for genuine reconciliation. Amadou Tom Mbodji is the man.
