Plumptre Shares Her Thoughts on Changing Nationality: ‘Representing Nigeria is of Utmost Importance’

Ashleigh Plumptre has shared her thoughts on her choice to change her national team representation from England to Nigeria, according to Completesports. The player for Al-Ittihad Ladies, a Saudi Arabian team, was born in Leicester, England. Plumptre started her football career in the youth system of England, playing for the U-15, U-17, U-19, and U-23 teams. She has played for clubs including Notts County, LA Galaxy OC, and Leicester City, where she played a key role in their FA Women’s Championship victory in the 2020/21 season. As the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations approaches, Plumptre chose to compete for Nigeria, honoring her paternal roots instead of remaining with the England squad. Additionally, South Africa’s Coach Ellis has expressed confidence in defeating the Super Falcons. It was a courageous and sincere decision based on her family and sense of self. Now, at 27 years old, she has established herself as a vital member of the Super Falcons, solidifying the defense and emerging as a leader both on and off the field. She is currently participating in her second AFCON and was also part of the Super Falcons team at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately, Plumptre was unable to compete in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris due to an injury. “Representing Nigeria means the world to me.” “I have always taken pride in my heritage, and showcasing that on the field is something I hold with great pride,” she shared with CAFonline. “Despite encountering injuries, experiencing doubt, and undergoing transitions, I have consistently relied on my principles — kindness, hard work, and humility.” That motivates me to continue.
