Sani expressed this comparison in a post on his X account on Wednesday. The former lawmaker emphasized that Canada’s sovereignty should be honored, stating, “The way President Trump is threatening Canada and Mexico resembles Putin’s actions against Ukraine.” Canada’s independence must be honored. If neighbors are treated like this, how will others be treated? The remark follows Trump’s comments at a news conference on Tuesday, where he indicated he might use “economic force” to unite Canada and the United States. He also mentioned his intention to attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
