The Commander of the Zamfara State Community Protection Guards ‘Asakarawa’ in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area is accused of killing Abdurrahman Muhammad, a prison warder, along with three other individuals. The deceased’s relatives made this allegation when they lodged a complaint with the Zamfara State Human Rights Commission, claiming that the commander played a role in their family member’s death. The “Askarawa,” or “Zamfara State Community Protection Guards,” were established by the Zamfara State government on February 1, 2024. They assist security agencies in fighting banditry and kidnapping in the state. In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST, a relative, Jamilu Muhammad Kaura, explained that they were frequently in touch with their brother, Abdurrahman Muhammad, until he abruptly went missing. Jamilu stated, “Residents told me that on October 28, 2024, security forces arrived at the house, forced the door open, and detained Abdurrahman Muhammad along with three others—a man and two women.” The detained individuals reportedly faced brutal beatings before their removal. Jamilu accused several of Abdurrahman’s associates, including Jamilu Bala, 77, and Shehu Malam Mani—who had past conflicts with him—of conspiring against him and enlisting the help of Zamfara security personnel to execute their scheme. He stated that this happened in front of witnesses, including Sani Babaje and Shehu Dan Tsohuwa. Another family member, Abdulmumini Muhammad, vowed to pursue the case until justice is achieved, saying, “we will not give up; our brother’s blood will not be in vain.” Following investigations, it was revealed that the bodies of multiple individuals, including Abdurrahman Muhammad, were discovered in a village named Gidan Sambo within the local government area. The family accused Ya’u Commander, the head of the Zamfara security guards in Kaura Namoda, of collaborating with Jamilu Bala (77) and Shehu Malam Mani to murder Abdurrahman Muhammad. The state police commissioner instructed the arrest and prosecution of Ya’u Commander, who was then placed in prison. However, the family raised concerns about the police granting bail to two other suspects, Jamilu Bala, 77, and Shehu Malam Mani, without informing them, which made them suspicious of wrongdoing. As a result, the family sought justice from the Zamfara State Human Rights Commission. DAILY POST reached out to the commission for an update on the investigation. The commission’s secretary, Hassan Haruna, stated that they had already filed a formal complaint with the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police and the Director of the Zamfara State Department of State Services (DSS) regarding the issue. When asked to respond to the accusations, the spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, SP Yazid Abubakar, advised the complainants to return to the state police command to discuss their complaint.
