Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has stated that former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has not left the All Progressives Congress (APC). This announcement comes as Sule dismissed the idea of opposition figures, including El-Rufai, merging ahead of the 2027 elections. Sule’s comments followed a strategic meeting involving El-Rufai, Shehu Gabam, chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Hamza Al-Mustapha, and Segun Sowunmi, an associate of Atiku Abubakar. The private meeting took place at the SDP Secretariat in Abuja, where they discussed the state of opposition cooperation in the country. Gabam mentioned that he is open to discussions focused on creating a better Nigeria. When speaking to reporters, he stated, “There is no official announcement from El-Rufai or any of them about officially joining the SDP.” As I mentioned, they are willing to discuss and negotiate for an improved Nigeria. “It’s not just about a political party; it’s about Nigeria’s future.” Nonetheless, Governor Sule stated during an appearance on Channels TV’s Today’s Politics, “El-Rufai has not departed from our party; he remains a member. I believe it’s premature to begin speculating about departures and assuming that the party is falling apart. I’m not worried.” Our party will decide what we will do over the next two years. I firmly believe we will excel over the next two years, and once that happens, I don’t think the party should be concerned about any mergers.
