In a stinging reversal for the executive, Prime Minister François Bayrou has been disavowed by the National Assembly in a decisive vote of confidence. By 364 votes against 194, the deputies refused to give their support to the government, precipitating the end of its mandate in Matignon. Nominated Prime Minister in December 2024, François Bayrou had attempted, this Monday, to rally a majority around his programme of budgetary adjustment, in a particularly tense economic and political context. Faced with a fragmented coalition and a strengthened opposition, he had decided to play his va-tout by engaging the responsibility of his government before the Assembly. But the strategy turned against him: the absence of a solid majority and the massive rejection of his discourse of general policy led to a defeat without appeal. This rejection marks a new turning point in the political crisis that the executive is going through. François Bayrou becomes the third premier ministre to be overthrown in less than a year, a record under the Fifth Republic. President Emmanuel Macron is once again forced to appoint a new head of government, in a climate of widespread distrust. According to Article 49-1 of the Constitution, the defeat of the government in a vote of confidence entails its resignation.
