Portugal recognises a State of Palestine

Portugal recognises a Palestinian State, declared on Sunday 21 September the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, following in the footsteps of the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, and preceding other countries which have announced that they would do so on Monday, including France. “Recognizing the State of Palestine is (…) the accomplishment of a fundamental, coherent and widely accepted policy”, he declared to journalists in New York, before the annual General Assembly of the UN which opens on Monday. “Portugal advocates the two-state solution as the only way to a just and lasting peace, a peace that promotes coexistence and peaceful relations between Israel and Palestine”, he added.
