The European Union is calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

In his speech to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye made a firm statement on the crisis in Gaza, which he described as “a tragedy indescribable by the allure of ethnic cleansing”. “We are witnessing a tragedy indescribable to the allure of an ethnic cleansing. In the face of such an inhumanity, to remain silent, not to act, is not an option; it would even be a passive complicity”, he declared before the United States in New York. “This conference is taking place at a time when the conscience of the world is profoundly disturbed by the intolerable situation in Gaza, a situation which has exceeded all limits. We are witnessing an indescribable tragedy, the allure of an ethnic cleansing”, he added. Several countries have described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocide”. For him, “in the face of so much inhumanity inflicted on the Palestinian people, to be silent and not to act would be a passive complicity”. It recalled the founding principles of the United Nations, namely the sovereignty of peoples, equality of rights, peace through justice, respect for international law and the protection of civilians even in wartime. “A lot of values, unfortunately, which are today annihilated in the rubble of Gaza”, he lamented. Bassirou Diomaye Faye is called upon to send a clear message to Israel. “The occupation must cease, the suffering of civilians must cease, we must work for an immediate cease-fire”, said President Faye. He also said that “Israel must stop its bombings and authorize the delivery of humanitarian aid by the UN”.
