The following is the statement by Nicolas Sarkozy to the press following the judgment of the Paris Correctional Tribunal which sentenced him on Thursday to five years’ imprisonment with a mandat de dépôt différé et exécution provisoire, thus sending him to prison in the near future: “What has happened today in this courtroom of the correctional tribunal of Paris is of extreme gravity for the rule of law, for the confidence that we can have in justice… More than ten years of investigation, millions of euros spent to find a Libyan financing which the correctional tribunal has just said could not, and for good reason, be found in my campaign. The tribunal went further by solemnly declaring that the Mediapart document which was at the origin of this procedure was, I quote, a fake. I have been sent before this tribunal for quatre délits. On three, I was relaxed. No funding found, no corruption.. I am therefore condemned for having allegedly let go two of my collaborators who had the idea of an illegal financing of my campaign. Since all these years, I have assumed all my responsibilities. I have naturally refused no audience.
