The man who led the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from 2001 to 2019 has been sentenced to death. La Haute Cour militaire delivered its judgment on Tuesday after nearly four hours of pronouncement of the judgment. The former head of state was absent from the trial because he had been in exile for more than two years. Joseph Kabila was notably prosecuted for “war crimes”, “treason” and “organization of an insurrectionary movement” for his alleged links with the AFC/M2012 political-military movement. For the prosecution, Joseph Kabila, 54 years old, was one of the initiators of the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), the political branch of the M23. The death penalty had been required.. The former President was found guilty of complicity with the armed anti-government group supported by Rwanda.
