The Nigerian Army has announced the death of Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Saidu Paiko, the Commanding Officer of the 202 Tank Battalion, along with several soldiers, after a violent clash with Boko Haram insurgents in the Kashimri region of Bama Local Government Area, Borno State. In a statement released on Monday by Major Appolonia Anele, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, it was revealed that troops from Operation Hadin Kai were able to fend off a planned attack by the terrorists but faced significant losses in the encounter. “On October 17, 2025, the troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI, under the 21 Special Armoured Brigade, successfully deterred an assault by Boko Haram terrorists in the Kashimri area. “Regrettably, this engagement resulted in the loss of the Commanding Officer and several other brave soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice,” the statement noted. Major Anele elaborated that the troops engaged in fierce fighting, eliminating numerous insurgents and destroying various terrorist hideouts in the vicinity. The operation effectively averted what could have been a catastrophic attack on civilians and vital infrastructure. “The valor of the troops thwarted the terrorists’ attempts to instigate fear and disrupt the peace and socio-economic activities in Bama and neighboring areas. Some of the escaping terrorists sustained injuries from gunfire as our forces maintained the upper hand during the operation,” she stated. The Army spokesperson referred to the fallen soldiers as heroes who gave their lives to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty and stability, promising that their legacies will be honored and remembered. “The Nigerian Army deeply grieves for these brave men.” The sacrifices they made reflect a deep commitment to service and patriotism. “We will keep their memory alive while we escalate our efforts to eliminate terrorism from our country,” said Major Anele. She also mentioned that the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has expressed sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, calling them “fathers, brothers, and sons who demonstrated remarkable bravery in confronting peril.” Oluyede reiterated the military’s steadfast commitment to continue its campaign against all terrorist groups until enduring peace is established in the North-East and throughout the nation. The Army also called on the public and media to avoid disseminating images of deceased soldiers until their families have been adequately notified, in order to honor their dignity and maintain the privacy of their loved ones.
