A delegation from the International Monetary Fund arrived in Dakar yesterday, Wednesday, to engage in crucial discussions concerning a new financial support programme. This twelve-day mission, which will run until 4 November 2025, aims mainly to examine the sustainability of the Senegalese public debt, recently reassessed at 132% of GDP, as well as the government’s efforts to align its budget with the guidelines of the Plan de redressement économique et social (PRES). This visit is part of the continuity of recent discussions held in Washington by a Senegalese delegation led by the Minister of Finance, Cheikh Diba. At the annual meetings of the Bretton Woods institutions, it had met with the Director-General of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, thus laying the foundations for the current negotiations. The present mission therefore represents the operational phase of the dialogue between Senegal and the international financial institution. Under the direction of Edward Gemayel, the IMF’s head of mission for Senegal, the team will have to reconcile the national economic recovery imperatives with the institution’s criteria, in a context where the conclusion of a financial agreement appears essential for the country’s economic stability.
