FG to set up a multi-million-dollar sugar production facility in Taraba.

The federal government, via the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), has launched plans for a multi-million-dollar sugar production project in Taraba State, with the goal of enhancing local production and supporting Nigeria’s pursuit of sugar self-sufficiency. Kamar Bakrin, the Executive Secretary and CEO of NSDC, led a team to Jalingo to discuss the project with Governor Agbu Kefas and the Taraba State Government. Bakrin stated that the initiative represents a significant investment that could greatly improve Nigeria’s sugar production capacity, decrease reliance on imports, and foster economic growth. He emphasized that the NSDC’s responsibilities include aiding investors with financing, feasibility studies, technical training, research, and land access. “Sugar is a major socio-economic commodity worldwide, providing around 100 million jobs in over 120 countries.” “Sugar estates also foster rural development and promote environmental sustainability,” Bakrin stated. He pointed out that Taraba State “successfully passed all technical and environmental suitability assessments,” making it an ideal site for large-scale sugar production. Bakrin also confirmed that Lee Group, through its subsidiary GNAAL Sugar, has fulfilled all criteria as a credible investor with both financial and technical capabilities. In response, Governor Agbu Kefas expressed the state government’s complete support, reaffirming his administration’s dedication to establishing an investment-friendly atmosphere. He characterized Taraba as abundant in natural resources, with extensive fertile land ideal for agriculture. Governor Kefas mentioned that the state has addressed previous security issues and is now stable and secure for investors, encouraging business stakeholders to take advantage of the opportunities available in the state’s agricultural sector, particularly in sugar production.
