A moving open letter: The voice of a 14-year-old martyr appeals to the unity between Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko

In a context of growing political tensions in Senegal, a poignant open letter circulated on social networks. Written from the point of view of a 14-year-old martyr, victim of the protests that preceded the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye to the presidency in March 2024, this letter addresses a cry of the heart to the “tons” Diomaye et Sonko. It implores unity between the President and his Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, in the name of the sacrifices made by the Senegalese people. This letter, which has already aroused vivid reactions online, reflects the anxieties of a nation tired of internal divisions and economic challenges. Since the arrival to power of the Faye-Sonko tandem, from the Pastef party (African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity), Senegal has experienced ambitious reforms aimed at restoring the sovereignty, justice and prosperity promised during the campaign. However, rumors of discord between the two leaders persisted for months.
