Good news for the Senegalese economy, the State of Senegal plans to acquire two new sugar production plants. This is an announcement made by the Minister of Industry and Commerce. Mr Guèye Diop, speaking on RTS’s “Point de vue” programme on Sunday 12 January, said: “These plants, which will be located in the regions of Kolda and Ziguinchor, will exploit sugar cane in Lower Casamance. The objective is to put an end to the monopoly that has existed in the sector for half a century. “Our government is against monopoly. It is not even normal that for 50 years, a single company has had the monopoly”, said Serigne Guèye Diop. During the broadcast, the former mayor of Sandiara also commented on the speculation about the increase in the price of foodstuffs recently on the market. Mr Guèye Diop assures that there are substantial stocks of sugar in the country.
