The Ministry of Industry and Commerce made public on Thursday the signing of a memorandum of understanding of major significance aimed at the commercialisation and consolidation of the national rice sector. This document, initiated by the vigil with producers and traders’ organizations, aims to intensify the consumption of local rice while guaranteeing a firm support to the farmers of the country. At the heart of this commitment is the fixing of the ex-works price of white rice at 350 F/Kg. This economic measure is designed to ensure a fair remuneration to producers and, simultaneously, to stimulate the attractiveness of the product to consumers. In return, the signatory commercial operators formally undertook to acquire the entire volume of rice available at the production sites. In order to further encourage the supply of the market by national rice, the Government has introduced a mechanism for indexing imports on the purchase of Senegalese rice.
