Ghana’s Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has promised to withdraw the questionable E-Levy within the first 120 days of President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership. During his screening before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 13, 2025, Dr. Forson repeated his commitment to getting off of the tax, a choice that has sparked mixed emotions.
Dr. Forson, a strong opposition of the E-Levy, described it as dangerous to Ghana’s shift toward a cash-light market and the progress of economic technology. He explained that, as a tax professional, he doesn’t see where the charge fits, saying,” The E-Levy is never a direct taxes, indirect taxes, or even an excise tax”. He insisted that the charge is poor for the market despite acknowledging that it generates income.
Dr. Forson assured Citizens that if approved as Finance Minister, he may reduce the E-Levy as part of the initial expenditure under the Mahama management. ” We stand by that, and I assure you the E-Levy may be gone within the 120 days we have promised”, he declared safely.
Dr. Forson even criticized the administration’s focus on making wealth through taxes without controlling spending. ” Why is it always about income? We need to pay more attention to organizing bills”, he stated.
He further promised to protect the vulnerable, saying,” We will not hurt the poor in society. We may defend them”. He added that his years of working with the Ghanaian sector have helped him develop policies that will benefit everyone and encourage progress.
Dr. Forson’s commitment to waste the E-Levy has divided thoughts. Adherents see it as a positive development, while reviewers are concerned about how the government will make up for the lost money.
