Since the inauguration of Bassirou Diomaye Faye in April 2024, Senegal has entered a new and decisive phase of its political history, marked by notable changes compared to the previous administration of Macky Sall. This transition occurs in a complex context, where the democratic and economic aspirations of the country must be reconciled with the internal and external challenges facing Senegal. Under the presidency of Macky Sall, who led the country from 2012 to 2024, Senegal has experienced relative political stability and sustained economic growth, in particular through investments in infrastructure and the development of extractive sectors such as oil and gas. However, Sall’s mandate was marred by allegations of opaque management of public resources and growing political tensions, particularly with the opposition. The political climate has been exacerbated by accusations of restriction of public freedoms and repression against opposition figures. These tensions reached their peak during his last mandate, contributing to a deep polarization of Senegalese society. In March 2024, the victory of Bassirou Diomaye Faye, leader of the Parti des Patriotes Africains du Sénégal pour le Travail (PASTEF), in the presidential election marked a turning point in the political history of the country. Faye won more than 54% of the votes, promising a renewal focused on transparency, governance and a more equitable distribution of resources. This election symbolizes the desire of the population to implement a fundamental change after years of frustrations related to the management of power by the previous administration.
