Sibongile Simoyi said she went through more than 20 past papers, from 2017 to 2023, to ensure she understood her subjects.

Sibongile Simoyi (18) from Tlakula Secondary School achieved six distinctions in the 2024 National Senior Certificate exams.

“I made sure I set my priorities straight and ensured I had no distractions from the beginning. I had to let go of some things I enjoy doing, even hobbies, and isolate for a bit,” she explained.

Simoyi said she used several study strategies, including different textbooks for each subject.

“I wanted to have as much information as possible from different sources. I never used to study with other people, like study partners,” she added.

She achieved distinctions in isiZulu HL, life orientation, business studies, English FAL, tourism and economics.

“I did not expect to get so many distinctions. Even though I worked hard, I had to double-check my exam number when I saw my results online to make sure they were actually mine,” Simoyi said.

She plans to study BCom Economics and Econometrics at the University of Johannesburg this year.

“When not studying, I enjoy spending time with my family and watching movies. I would encourage other learners to be consistent. It pays off. Set a goal, commit to it and be consistent until you get what you want.

“Now, I am enjoying the benefits of all the sacrifices I made,” she added.
