This Wednesday, January 15, should have marked a significant milestone with the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, unveiled by two American presidents, one leaving and the other entering. This declaration comes after more than fifteen months of an asymmetrical conflict pitting one of the most powerful armies in the world against a besieged population, lacking external military support. This announcement, confirmed by Qatar, mediator to the negotiations, was greeted by cries of joy and relief among the Palestinians, according to an article in Sud Quotidien. However, on the same evening, the Israeli army intensified its bombardments on Gaza, destroying 50 sites and causing more than 80 deaths, as indicated by the international media. These actions raise questions about the real intentions behind the ceasefire and the impact of the strikes on a city already largely devastated. The advanced figures indicate massive destruction: 75% of the dwellings destroyed, 80% of the agricultural land unusable, and the survivors threatened by famine, cold and lack of hygiene. The administrative, educational and health infrastructures are non-existent, making Gaza a disaster zone both human and material. The scale of the human losses is such that it calls into question the Israeli military justifications, which claim to target precisely the Hamas fighters. The impact on civilians is devastating, with thousands of people killed or traumatized.
