Monseigneur André Gueye, head of the Catholic Church in the regions of Thiès and Diourbel, expressed his support for the rendition of accounts, while stressing the importance of respecting the rights of the accused. The declarations were made during the ceremony celebrating the 70th anniversary of the École Sainte Croix de Bambey, an event which brought together religious, educational and civil personalities. However, the Court stated that this must necessarily take place within the framework of respect for the fundamental rights of the individuals concerned. According to him, justice is essential to advance on the path of development, but it must be rendered in an equitable manner and respectful of the rights of all citizens, including those of the accused. “The Church is against violence in all its forms. It is against any form of tension which could cause instability. But the Church is for justice, without which one cannot advance on the path of development. L’Église est pour la paix, without which all development is compromised.
