Loudmouth, controversial Ghanaian journalist, Captain Smart, has spoken out against accusations that he incited the youth in Obuasi to engage in violent acts against authorities and AngloGold Ashanti mines.
In a self-recorded video, Captain Smart denied reports of encouraging any form of violence, stating that he did not incite the youth or motivate them to take lawless actions.
Captain Smart clarified that the video, which critics are referencing to link him to the unrest in Obuasi, was recorded in 2023. He emphasized that his comments were taken out of context and have no connection to the recent clashes between suspected illegal miners and the Ghana Armed Forces in the area.
“I know I’m the king of the media, and my words go far, but I didn’t in any way encourage the youth in Obuasi to engage in violence,” he stated.
His statement comes in the wake of harsh criticisms on social media, where users have accused him of using his platform irresponsibly. Social media commentators, such as Benjamin Effah Amponsah, expressed concerns about the potential impact of his remarks:
“One journalist sat on the radio and incited the youth against authority, which led to civil war in Rwanda 🇷🇼. Many lives were lost, and many more went missing. Are we going to sit idly by and watch Captain Smart jeopardize our beloved country, Ghana? Over 8 deaths have now been recorded in Obuasi due to what Captain Smart said on TV. Some are claiming they are NDC supporters, but the question is: are they not human beings?”
Similarly, Charlotte Nicole criticized Captain Smart’s approach, suggesting his comments undermine journalistic integrity:
“This is what journalism has been reduced to. Captain Smart has been on TV constantly inciting people for the wrong reasons, and Obuasi killings cannot be overlooked, and everyone is quiet. GJA watches him disrespect authorities, and oh, he belongs to the NDC, so it’s ok. Media General, this is the kind of journalists y’all produced, and Ghana is gradually becoming a mess and without law and order.”
Captain Smart acknowledged the far-reaching influence of his words as a prominent media figure but firmly maintained that the ongoing unrest in Obuasi cannot be attributed to his past comments. He called on critics to examine the situation objectively rather than misinterpret a video recorded years ago.
