The Court of Appeal has recently confirmed the life sentence of René Capain Bassène, accused of the murder of 14 men in 2018 in the forest of Bayotte. However, the MFDC rejects these accusations, affirming that it is a plot orchestrated against the former journalist and militant casamançais. During a recent visit to the hospital, members of the movement have noted an alarming deterioration of his state of health. They have denounced an inadequate management of his anaesthesia and a lack of appropriate medical care. “We have found him in a critical condition. He was beaten, showed obvious signs of torture and was subjected to inhuman conditions. It is totally unacceptable”, they declared with indignation. For the MFDC, René Capain Bassène is a ” fils de la Casamance ” unjustly treated, and his situation requires an immediate intervention. The movement calls his continued detention a grave injustice and urges the Senegalese government to act without delay to correct what it considers a flagrant violation of human rights.
