Teachers, parents and community members joined forces and cleaned the school premises on January 19.
Kwa-Thema – Parents and community members of Kwa-Thema joined hands to clean Fred Habedi Primary School on January 19.
The school was not in good condition. It had tall grass and litter and was not conducive to school activities.
School principal Leonard Yamba said the school could not do maintenance because of the rain experienced before schools re-opened. With only two cleaners, the school lacked the necessary cleanliness for the student’s arrival.
“I spoke to the school management team and asked educators to help clean the school. We also gave newsletters to the learners where we requested the parents’ support towards our back-to-school clean-up.
“We received a lot of support from the community and parents,” explained Yamba.
He mentioned everyone joining the initiative contributed something; some brought brooms, cleaning supplies, mops and grass-cutting equipment.
He explained his biggest desire as the school principal is to ensure the school performs excellently within the 2025 academic year.
“We will ensure this school becomes one of the best-achieving schools in terms of curriculum delivery, and wellness of the school, which includes cleanliness.
“We will keep maintaining the school with the little that we have. We will continue to partner with the community, business people and other stakeholders who can assist us in bettering our learning environment,” he added.
The school has a mobile math and science lab which they aimed to advance for learners to specialise in maths, science and technology. Yamba explained the lab is fully equipped with lab equipment, made of plastic and child-friendly.
“This allows the learners to learn theoretically and practically. The labs cater for grades one to three learners,” said Yamba.
“I thank the community and parents around Overline and surrounding areas for continuously supporting, cleaning and partnering with the school.
“This school belongs to the community. I want the community to take ownership of the school, as that may assist the school positively.
“Community members are watchdogs of the school, resulting in additional security for the school. This also prevents criminal activities from taking place within the school premises,” concluded Yamba.
