The Justin Owens serial killer post appears to be just the latest variant in a long-running Facebook scam in which scammers share content they believe can go viral in tons of Facebook groups, each with a localized hashtag to create the impression the incident is occuring close to residents of that group. Once the story goes viral with tons of shares, the scammers change the original post to whatever malicious link they want people to visit and then that link has thousands of shares already. These scams usually utilize emotional posts such as a fictionalized missing person or a raging serial killer on the loose in a community.
Needless to say there are no reports of a serial killer running loose in the U.S at this time.
