Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reaffirmed his determination to passing the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, into law by 2025. On January 26, Bagbin addressed the nation’s traditional leaders and supporters of the National Democratic Congress ( NDC ) and emphasized his commitment to upholding Ghanaian cultural and moral standards. He bravely stated,” I may lose my life for this induce”, expressing the weight of his personal responsibility.
Bagbin revealed that he intends to consult with the Attorney General and Justice Minister to decide the best course of action to take in order to move the act forward. The expenses, which was passed by Parliament in the 8th Parliament, expired in 2024 after failing to obtain political approval. Bagbin criticized the original chairman for refusing to sign the bill, calling it unconstitutional. ” The Transgender bill was passed by Parliament, but the previous leader refused to consent to it, which was illegal. Parliament is the power for passing legislation, not the leader. That decision was incorrect, and all of you punished him for that”, Bagbin remarked, referring to the activities of the previous leadership.
Bagbin gave a brief description of his next steps, saying,” I’m going to ask the new Attorney General and Justice Minister for their suggestions so that we can send it to the new leader for assent.” This will not get longer, it will be passed this time. It is immoral, and nobody should pun with me on this. For this reason, I could lose my life. He promised the crowd that the president would sign the legislation in 2025.
