​Traffic de chanvre en Casamance: when the Senegalese customs are striking fort 

  La Journée internationale de la douane (JID) is an opportunity to measure the extent of the Indian hemp trade in the southern region of Senegal, particularly in Ziguinchor. The event was marked by the incineration of prohibited goods, including more than 3 tonnes of Indian hemp, highlighting the extent of the plague in this part of the country. In fact, goods with a total value estimated at 445 million CFA francs were destroyed, including: 3,439 tonnes of Indian hemp, 22 kg of Indian hemp seeds, a lot of counterfeit medicines worth 86 million CFA francs, a lot of seized black banknotes with a counter value of 140 million CFA francs. Le Colonel Malang Diédhiou, Regional Director of the Customs of the Southern Zone, underlined: “These operations reveal the importance of this traffic in the region. They also reflect our commitment to combating this phenomenon through enhanced cooperation. “. The security forces, notably the Gendarmerie, the Police and the Water and Forests, work in synergy with the Customs to counter this worrying phenomenon. Mr Diédhiou expressed his optimism that this traffic would be significantly reduced by increased coordination between the various security forces and customs. The day began with a walking tour, bringing together administrative authorities, members of civil society and various participants.
