Police probe viral video of Lagos officer assaulted by mob over alleged theft

The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into a video circulating online that shows a uniformed officer being assaulted by a crowd over allegations of theft.

The footage, which surfaced on Wednesday, shows the officer seated on the ground with blood visible around his mouth as an irate mob surrounds him.

The officer, still in uniform, appears distressed and pleads for assistance while onlookers film the encounter on their phones.

Voices in the background repeatedly accuse him of stealing, though the precise nature of the alleged offence was unclear at the time of filing this report.

In the video, another police officer is seen pushing through the crowd in an effort to rescue his colleague, but the mob continues to chant “Ole!” (Thief) in Yoruba.

The incident appears to have occurred in a busy area, with commercial vehicles and tricycles moving slowly around the scene, including a yellow bus marked “Ayedade.”

Responding to the viral clip, Lagos Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that an inquiry was under way to establish the circumstances and verify the identity of the officer.

Writing on X, Adebisi stated, “The command has seen the viral video. We are investigating to determine the full circumstances and confirm the identity of the officer. Updates will follow soon.”

The Nigerian Police Force has repeatedly warned against mob action, stressing that allegations against civilians or security personnel must be handled through lawful and official procedures.
