
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Sokoto State Council, has raised concerns over worsening insecurity in parts of the state, where residents reportedly leave their homes at night and return only in the morning.
The warning was issued in a communiquĆ© signed by Comrade Usman Mohammed Binji, Chairman, and Muhammad Nasir Bello, Secretary, at the end of the Unionās Congress on Saturday at the NUJ Press Centre, Zuru Road, Sokoto.
While acknowledging recent efforts by the Nigerian Army and other security agencies against banditry and kidnappings, the NUJ expressed concern over insecurity in areas such as Wurno Local Government Area and urged authorities to deploy adequate measures to protect lives and property.
The union also highlighted the plight of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, affected by insecurity and called on governments and humanitarian agencies to increase support in shelter, healthcare, education, and livelihoods.
The NUJ further urged the state government to accelerate ongoing projects in roads, health, and education and improve access to public information, including budget implementation processes.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to ethical journalism and accountability in reporting security and development issues in Sokoto State.
