Pretoria – South Africa has extended its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Australia following the tragic terrorist attacks in Sydney.
Earlier on Sunday, 14 December 2025, a mass shooting occurred at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach during a public Hanukkah celebration (“Chanukah by the Sea”) organised by Chabad of Bondi.
Reports from Australia say that at least 12 people were killed, including one gunman shot by police.
As many as 29 were injured, including two police officers who were reportedly in a serious condition.
The event, marking the first day of Hanukkah, had drawn hundreds to thousands of attendees, including families, near the Bondi Pavilion and Archer Park.
When the gunmen attacked, attendees were seen running for their lives.
Two gunmen were known to be involved.
One was killed in a confrontation with police, and the second was in critical condition and in custody.
An improvised explosive device was found in a vehicle linked to one attacker on Campbell Parade.
Australian authorities, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns, declared the incident a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community.
It has been described as an act of antisemitism.
South Africa’s Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation issued a statement sympathising with the Australians.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected, especially the families and friends of the victims,” said the statement issued by Chrispin Phiri, Ministry Spokesperson.
“We condemn this senseless violence, which appears to have targeted the Jewish faithful while they were lighting candles for Hanukkah at Bondi Beach.
“There is no justification for terrorism or attacks on any group based on faith or identity.
“South Africa stands in solidarity with Australia during this period of mourning and grief.”
