The Director-General of the Senegalese Agency for Rural Electrification (ASER), Jean-Michel Sène, revealed on Monday that only 7 673 of the 23 000 rural localities in Senegal currently have electricity. During a seminar on capacity building for Members of the Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources. He explained that despite the progress made, a large part of the country is still in the dark. “Of the 23 000 rural localities that exist at national level, only 7 273 are currently electrified”, said Jean-Michel Sène, stressing that rural electrification remains a major challenge for the country. The rate of rural electrification is 65.67%, while the rate of access to electricity in the whole country is 86%, added the Director-General of ASER”. Jean-Michel Sène drew attention to the “gap” between the already electrified and the non-electrified localities, stressing the importance of strengthening efforts to close this gap. ASER collaborates with the private sector to produce these equipment locally and thus reduce the costs related to the electrification of the country.
