The decision to suspend the USAID programmes is likely to have dramatic consequences for many families in Casamance. According to Ousmane Sandeng, mayor of Boutoupa-Camaracounda, this measure has endangered the future of nearly 300 vulnerable families. These families have recently returned to their lands after years of displacement due to conflict in the region. The “Shelter for Life” programme, supported by USAID, had been set up to provide them with a roof, but its interruption could condemn them to live in precarious conditions, even without shelter. A meeting was held on Wednesday 5 February 2025 in Ziguinchor. He stressed that these families, who had made the choice to return to their homeland this year, were counting on USAID’s help to rebuild their lives after years of exile. “These 300 families relied heavily on the United States’ programme in the hope of finding shelter. They will no doubt not see their dwellings covered.
