Amadou Kandé, a fisheries agent assigned to the Joal control post, was the victim of a violent attack last Wednesday. According to a communiqué of the Syndicat des travailleurs de la pêche et de l’aquaculture du Sénégal (SYTRAPAS), the aggressor was a charretier. The trade union strongly condemns this act, which it describes as “cruelty and barbarity” and calls on the authorities to take concrete measures to avoid such incidents in the future. This incident highlights the dangers to which fishermen are exposed in the exercise of their duties, in particular when they engage in illegal practices. The syndicate recalls other similar aggressions occurring in Hann, Cayar, Popenguine and elsewhere. It stressed the urgency of raising awareness of the need to preserve fisheries resources and called for a general mobilisation of society to combat violence against fisheries workers. The trade union warns that a national work stoppage could be envisaged in case of a repetition of such attacks. In addition, SYTRAPAS expresses its full support to Amadou Kandé and wishes him a speedy recovery.
