GMLD urges Lagos govt to intervene as JOHESU strike disrupts healthcare services

The Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors, GMLD, Lagos State Chapter, has called on the Lagos State Government to urgently step in and broker a resolution to the ongoing industrial action by the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, warning that the strike is already disrupting critical healthcare services across the state.

The appeal was made in a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos and jointly signed by the Chairman of the Guild, Mr Adekoya Julius, and the Secretary General, Dr Leo Aniakor.

According to the Guild, the prolonged withdrawal of services, particularly at screening and diagnostic centres, has severely limited access to essential laboratory tests needed for safe blood transfusions and effective clinical management of patients.

The GMLD noted that the disruption has led to delays in diagnosis and treatment, creating avoidable risks to patients and placing public health under increasing strain.

The Guild also expressed concern that sustained industrial action could undermine the significant progress and investments made by the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Committee, LSBTC, in building a dependable and safe blood supply system for residents.

Emphasising that healthcare delivery should not become collateral damage in labour disputes, the Guild maintained that no Lagos resident should be exposed to preventable illness or loss of life over issues that can be resolved through meaningful dialogue.

It therefore urged the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene by facilitating constructive engagement among all parties involved, with a view to achieving a swift and amicable end to the strike in the best interest of public health and patient safety.
