Flood victims in Akwa Ibom State on Thursday received relief materials from the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.
The flood, which occurred in May 2025 affected Uyo, Ibesikpo, Uruan and Nsit Atai local government areas of the state.
Distributing the items under the Federal Government “Special Intervention for the 2025 flood victims” in Uyo, the Director General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, stated that the gesture was aimed to provide immediate relief to the victims as they rebuild their lives after the flood disaster.
Umar, who was represented by Mrs Mmandu Aisueni, Head of Operations in Akwa Ibom, urged the victims to accept the offer from the federal government with gratitude even though it would not be commensurate with what they’ve lost to the disaster.
She said “It is with mixed emotions that we gather here today, saddened by the devastating impact of the recent floods, yet hopeful as we come together to provide much-needed relief to our brothers and sisters
“The effects of the flood have been deeply felt in these communities, disrupting lives and livelihoods, and leaving many in urgent need.”
Umar stressed the need for governments, especially at the grassroots to intensify efforts in sensitizing and initiating policies to assist communities to combat weather-related disasters to building a resilient nation.
On his part, the member representing Uyo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Mark Esset, commended the federal government for its response to the flood victims expressing joy that the relief materials received from the federal government were of the best quality and would help to cushion the effect of the disaster.
One the beneficiaries, Mr Idorenyin Inyang, from Nsit Atai LGA, who spoke with our correspondent, expressed happiness over the gesture by NEMA, saying that the relief materials will help them in these tough times.
