An off-duty EMPD officer was gunned down in KwaThema this morning.
While details are still sketchy as to what happened. According to Zweli Dlamini, the metro’s spokesperson, it is believed that the officer was attacked by two assailants in front of a spaza shop just after 08:00.
The men shot the officer and stole his private firearm.
This shooting comes hot on the heels of the killing of an EMPD traffic warden in Thembisa on January 29.
“We strongly condemn these senseless killings of officers. These are men and women who have taken it upon themselves to serve and protect our people and their property, yet they seem to become targets for criminals.
“We sincerely hope that arrests are made speedily so that those behind these incidents can face the full might of the law,” said MMC for Community Safety Sizakele Masuku, who appealed to the public to co-operate and share critical information that may assist in resolving crimes with the police.
Police are following certain leads, but no one has been arrested yet.
