‘Some individuals don’t want new tax laws to succeed’ – Nigerian Govt speaks on saboteurs

Nigerian government said that some individuals are sabotaging the success of the new tax laws with misinformation and disinformation.

The Special Adviser to the President on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, made the allegation on Thursday during the inauguration of a Joint Committee of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms in Abuja.

He explained the new tax laws are filled with pro-poor policies and designed to recalibrate national revenue generation.

Fasua said the inaugurated committee would work to counter misinformation and disinformation surrounding the reforms, which he claimed were being spread by alleged saboteurs.

“People are trying to ensure that, maybe, if they can manage to do it, the reforms do not succeed.

“However, we must quickly say that despite this resistance, this is a pro-poor policy—a policy on recalibrating the revenues of this country that ensures the poorest Nigerians are not touched, except positively,” he said.

This comes days after a House of Representatives member, Abdulsamman Dasuki alleged discrepancies between the tax laws passed by the national assembly and what was gazetted for public usage.

However, the National Assembly vowed to address the allegation.

DAILY POST reports that the new tax laws are expected to be implemented from January 1, 2026.

In June 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the tax bills into law.
