2027 presidency: Peter Obi, Amaechi strong contenders with Atiku – Dele Momodu

A prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Dele Momodu, has identified former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi as very strong contenders from Southern Nigeria.

Momodu made this assertion while emphasizing the importance of pairing either Obi or Amaechi with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in preparation for the 2027 presidential race.

He shared his views during an interactive X Space discussion titled “Avrilsspace: The Electoral Mathematics for 2027.”

In his words: “So for me, if we have him (Atiku) with Peter Obi or Amaechi, these are strong contenders in the South, though everybody is saying ‘I want to run,’ but only one person can run.”

The seasoned journalist further stated that Obi has particularly strong prospects in any future contest.

He said: “I believe Peter Obi stands a very good chance. Rotimi Amaechi is a very experienced politician when it comes to winning the presidential election; don’t forget the role he played for Buhari twice.”

Momodu also predicted a mass movement from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ADC.

According to him, many PDP members would switch allegiance once they realize the party has become politically constrained.

He explained: “The majority of the people in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will migrate to the ADC when they see that there is a total roadblock. You can see that my good friend and brother, Governor Ademola Adeleke, has moved to the Accord Party because he knew he had reached a roadblock in the PDP, and his own election is coming very soon in 2026, so we must urgently agree on the way forward.”
