The supporters of Farba Ngom, arrested during demonstrations, will be judged today. For Seydi Gassama, Secretary General of Amnesty International in Senegal, they must be released in respect of the right to peaceful demonstration guaranteed by the Constitution. “The supporters of the Deputy Mayor of Agnam, the Honourable Farba Ngom, who were arrested and placed under mandat de dépôt while accompanying him peacefully to a hearing at the Judicial Financial Pool must be released in freedom at the outcome of their trial today. The right of peaceful assembly is guaranteed by the constitution. The exercise of this right, even when it has not been the subject of a prior declaration, should not be repressed”, wrote Seydi Gassama. “Furthermore, the ministerial decree prohibiting political rallies in the commune of Plateau and around the African Renaissance Monument must be repealed in accordance with a decision of the ECOWAS Court of Justice”, he added. They had then refused to leave the premises despite an injunction from the forces of order. The police used tear gas, which provoked a reaction from Farba Ngom’s supporters, who threw stones. Par la suite, several were arrested, placed in custody and then placed under a mandat de dépôt, notably for illicit gathering and destruction of property of others.
