Accountability is neither a political project nor an electoral programme. It is part of the fundamental principles of good governance and the obligation to report on the management of public resources. In this sense, the regime in place has shown courage and transparency in putting forward this democratic requirement, an approach which should be welcomed and encouraged. As the President of the Parliament rightly pointed out, the presentation of accounts must not become an instrument for settling political accounts. It must above all serve to strengthen the confidence of citizens in public institutions. In that regard, any person involved must be able to benefit from fair treatment, in strict respect of the rights of the defence. It is the duty of the judiciary to carry out its work independently, free from political influence and external pressure, in order to guarantee the impartiality of its decisions.
