DA Says Former Minsiter George Quit The Party Amid Accusations Of Wrongdoing

Cape Town – Soon after Former Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Dion George announced his resignation from the Democratic Alliance (DA), the party revealed that he had pending allegations of wrongdoing against him.

Earlier on Thursday, 15 January 2026, Dr. George announced his resignation on eNCA, saying: “Today, I have written to the DA to cancel my party membership that I have held since 1995.

“I also resign as the party’s chairperson of Federal Finance and as a Member of Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, where I was first sworn in on 17 January 2008.

“The situation has become intolerable. I am being pushed out, and it is no longer feasible for me to remain in the Party.”

The announcement comes weeks after Dr. George was axed as a Cabinet Minister in November last year at the request of DA party leader John Steenhuisen.

Dr. George was replaced as Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister by party spokesperson Willie Aucamp.

However, Dr. George hit back, accusing Steenhuisen of abusing the party’s credit card.

On Monday, Steenhuisen was cleared of any wrongdoing after a probe found that the expenditure on the credit card was fully reconciled.

Commenting on the matter on Thursday, 15 January 2026, Helen Zille, DA Federal Council Chairperson, said the party notes the resignation of Dr. Dion George from the party.

“It is unfortunate that Dr. George has resigned before answering a pending disciplinary before the DA’s Federal Legal Commission.”

Zille said the accusations against Dr. Geoarge include:

  • Allegations that staff appointments to his ministerial office were done in a way that unjustifiably raised their salaries, at public expense;
  • Allegations that staff in his ministry sought departmental information to pursue internal party political matters; and
  • Bringing the party into disrepute through the media.

“It would have been preferable for Dr. George to go through the Federal Legal Commission process to test the veracity of these allegations.

“The rest of the Federal Legal Commission process will proceed as determined by the DA’s Federal Executive on Monday.

“We wish Dr. George well in his future endeavours.”
