Mpumalanga Floods: Adverse Weather Forces Some Schools To Suspend Classes

Mbombela (Nelspruit) – The Mpumalanga Department of Education has temporarily suspended teaching and learning in flood-stricken areas in the Ehlanzeni District Municipality.

Adverse weather conditions have left several houses flooded and bridges submerged, making it difficult for learners to get to school.

The flood-hit areas in Mpumalanga include Bushbuckridge, Nkomazi, and Mbombela.

Fatalities have also been reported as a result of the floods.

Last week, a 44-year-old hawker, Esther Mathenjwa, and two-year-old Sibusiso Mnisi were swept away in separate drowning incidents in Msholozi, near White River outside Mbombela.

Spokesperson Jasper Zwane, said the Department of Education, suspended classes on Thursday, 15 January, and Friday, 16 January 2026.

“Rainfall has weakened compared to earlier in the week; however, the aftermath of the heavy downpours remains evident,” said Zwane.

“Given these conditions, schools in Bushbuckridge Local Municipality and Ehlanzeni District are encouraged to apply their discretion guided by the realities on the ground when deciding on the continuation or temporary suspension of teaching and learning,”

Zwane said teaching and learning would resume depending on the weather conditions.

“The safety of learners, educators, and all school personnel remains paramount.

The department strongly cautions school communities, learners, and staff against crossing overflowing bridges, rivers, streams, or any hazardous areas.

“These dangers remain significant despite what may appear to be improving weather conditions,” Zwane said.

“The Department will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further guidance as necessary.”

At the weekend, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa assessed the extent of the damage.

The severe weather has been classified as a national disaster, which enables the expeditious relief for those affected by the floods.
