Johannesburg – Police have announced the death of two schoolchildren who had been hospitalised after the Vanderbijlpark minibus taxi horror crash.
A statement from the office of the Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng said: “Two more learners died in hospital in the early hours of Thursday, 22 January 2026”.
Initially, 12 schoolchildren lost their lives in the deadly crash on Monday, 19 January 2026.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the 22-year-old scholar transport driver was now facing 14 counts of culpable homicide.
The driver, who was arrested when he was discharged from the hospital, is also facing charges of reckless and negligent driving.
Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the suspect was expected to appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court today, Thursday, 22 January 2026.
