The Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, called for sacrifices in the face of the current state of public finances, starting with the example of the State itself. He insisted on the need to reduce the State’s train of life. In the light of the foregoing, the Commission considers that it is appropriate to extend the period of validity of the aid to the period from 1 January 1999 to 31 December 2000 and to extend it to the period from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2000. The Head of Government also reassured the social partners by stressing that this meeting was only a first step and that there would be other sectoral meetings during the next two months. According to him, the objective is to reach an official global agreement with the trade unions and employers which will be announced on May 1st. In the meantime, the Head of Government calls for a national surge in the interest of the nation and invites the social partners to suspend their strikes.
